Frustrating day for MX2 riders in Trentino

Mikkel Haarup and Wilson Todd each experienced a frustrating day in the first of three rounds of the FIM World MX2 Motocross Championship at Pietramurata in Trentino.

Overtaking has always proven difficult in the MX2 class around the hardpack switchback track in the shadow of the Italian Dolomites and both riders suffered from unfortunate getaways in each moto. Haarup had shown good pace in Qualifying to earn tenth gate-pick but got closed down on the entrance to the awkward first turn in each moto; F&H Kawasaki MX2 Racing Team’s young Dane showed determination to advance from sixteenth to twelfth in race one and from twenty-third to fourteenth in race two for thirteenth overall. Bike It MTX Kawasaki’s Wilson Todd faced a mountain to climb after qualifying nineteenth; the Australian was inevitably run wide into the track banking at the first turn of race one before recovering nine places from twenty-sixth on the opening lap to seventeenth at the finish. Risking a gate pick on the extreme inside of the gate for race two he again found his path cut off at turn one and missed the points. Both riders will return on Wednesday with the resolve to find the solution to round the awkward opening turns amongst the leaders to put their KX250s back where they belong in  the top ten.
